Chicago Artists Month 2009

West Carroll Open Studios, 2008

In October 2008, I participated in Chicago Artists Month for the first time. I had only been in my studio building on West Carroll street for a few months, so organizing an open studios event there was a little tricky — I applied for inclusion in the citywide program last May before even meeting more than a few people in my building, and then worked backwards from there. The event was a great way for people in the studios to get to know each other, and brought visitors from all around the city and suburbs. I was impressed with the amount of support and publicity we had through Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs.

October seems to be a long way off, but the deadline to register for inclusion in Chicago Artists Month is approaching soon. The online registration form needs to be completed by May 15, and it’s worth it to plan things out a little more and see how any public programs you’re part of might be related to this year’s theme, “Chicago Artists Month 2.0,” referring to Web 2.0 and the use of interactivity and technology in art.

Drop me a comment or email if you’re planning something in the Garfield Park area — we’re definitely interested in pooling resources and making sure that our visitors get to see as much as possible when they make the rounds!
